Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 1 - 9 Old Bristolians Ladies

Shepton started well in what promised to be one of the toughest matches of the season so far and played some of their best hockey to date. For the first quarter the game was fairly even with Shepton giving as good as they got, passing extremely well and forcing OBs to really work for their advances. OB attacks were well covered by the Shepton defence and midfield but eventually OBs were able to score, leading 2-0 at half time.

Shepton continued to pressurise the OB defence and were unlucky not to convert some well worked play into goals. Sheptons only goal came from a penalty stroke placed in the top corner by Cichocka after a run by Chant. Although Shepton continued an excellent display of hockey it was just not their day as the OB forward line relentlessly attacked the Shepton defence. The scoreline in no way reflected the standard of play from Shepton. Phillips Tyres Man of the match was Lloyd-Jones for a solid performance as centre back.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 3 - 3 Mendip Ladies 1st XI

This week Shepton were playing at home against local rivals Mendip. Always a tough game, Shepton started tentatively and found themselves defending their goal almost immediatley. However the defence soon rallied and managed to contain the threat, and the game soon turned around. From the backline Shepton pressed forward into the Mendip D and converted their first goal from a well worked penalty corner between Trippick and Wolf and struck by Chant. Mendip were soon on the offencive again and managed to sneak a shot through the keepers legs, this was soon followed by an unfortunate deflection finding the corner of the Shepton net allowing Mendip to lead the game into half time.

After the team talk with coach Tom Ward, Shepton returned to the pitch raring to go. Gaining most of the controlled play Shepton worked hard to maintain possession with Reynolds and Wolf feeding the ball across the pitch out to the wings to set up the attack. This paid off as mounting pressure in the Mendip circle from Brooker and McConnal allowed Chant to convert Sheptons second goal, equalising the score.

After a break from the Mendip attack Shepton conceded another penalty corner and were unlucky to concede a goal from the straight strike at top D that Woodland was just unable to reach. In true form for the match Shepton picked up the pace again and began hassling the Mendip defence, paying off with Chants third goal and maintaining the score at 3 a piece. This was a tough game as always and the scoreline reflected the excellent play from both sides.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 1 - 8 Yeovil and Sherborne Ladies

Travelling to Sherborne this weekend to face top of the league, unbeaten Yeovil & Sherborne Shepton started brightly, immediately putting pressure on the Yeovil defence and within minutes Reynolds struck the Yeovil backboard from a McConnall cross. Yeovil slowly began building pressure against the Shepton defence but with man of the match Wolf in command at the back, Lloyd Jones man marking the Yeovil troublemaker, Durston controlling the right flank and tackling machine Pool on the left meant the Yeovil onslaught was suppressed and limited. However, Shepton began to find themselves increasingly defending short corners and from these Yeovil began to convert some impressive set plays.

Shepton kept fighting throughout the game and implemented some impressive play utilising all aspects of the previous training session. Marking Yeovil tightly and holding the ball gave the Shepton halves control of play in the second half which fed some excellent chances to the forward line. Tracking back with their opponents ensured all Yeovil attacks were covered proficiently which prevented them scoring from much of their counter attacks. Although conceding further short corners allowed the score line to grow, Shepton played an amazing game that in no way reflected in the score line.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 4 - 2 Firebrands 3rd XI

After a superb training session this week, Shepton were geared up and ready for a win!

Shepton started with authority and hope, our first goal coming from fabulous composure from the back line working up through the pitch and ending with Chanty skinning 4 defenders and with a beautiful strike hitting the top right corner, wonderful start. And a second goal shortly followed from a wild run from Steph!

A short corner was won thanks to magical play between the mid field line. Wolff pushed out to an unexpecting Durst, who shot with precision, and the ball hit the back board with an almighty thud! Leaving Shepton 3-2 up at half time and the opposition thoroughly frustrated.

Fierbrands, came back with force but Kerri our own fire fighter was ready to extinguish any chance they made.  Sheptons new formation was running circles around a very good team. However we were tested at the back a few times but not much was getting pass our stand in keeper and Captain Holly Hard Nut!

All in all a beautiful game of hockey with delightful play from everyone!

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 3 - 7 Clevedon Ladies

Shepton had a scrappy start in their first league fixture of the season. Poor communication and uncertainty when marking led to Clevedon quickly converting their first goal past stand-in keeper Woodhead. More goals followed as Clevedon advanced on Shepton with effective passing to increase the score to 5-0 at half time.

After an intensive team discussion Shepton began the second half with renewed energy and advanced on Clevedon with speed and skill to convert their first goal from a cracking shot from Squire, as the result of a well worked short corner routine between Moore, Wolff and Squire. Shepton now had control of the game and were continuing to force errors from Clevedon allowing Ciouchka to make a fast pass to Squire who broke free from her marker to take on the keeper, scoring Sheptons next goal in quick succession.

However, Clevedon began fighting back and were able to put another goal past Shepton to bring the score to 6-2, but perserverance from Shepton and quick reactions from McConall allowed her to put one past the keeper as she attempted to clear a shot from Squire.

Due to a poor start Shepton struggled to break even with Clevedon and were hard pressed to catch them on the score board, however in the second half Shepton moved much more effectively as a team, were communicating and marking well and were able to play some excellent hockey to their usual high standard. Man of the match was given to Squire, closely followed by Owens. Next league fixture is 1pm at the Stade Du Mallet.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 2 - 1 Bridgwater Ladies

After a resounding win last week Shepton went to Bridgwater with renewed confidence. The game was affected by the extreme weather conditions and Shepton started the game battling into the wind. Great all round strength after 15 minutes found Squire who took on the Bridgwater defence on to put Shepton into the driving seat. A controversial decision bought Bridgwater back into the game so Shepton had to up a gear and fight for the three points. Outstanding play from Reynolds, Brooker, Manders and Trippick ensured Shepton got rewarded with a penalty corner which Izzy calmly converted putting Shepton back in the points again just before half time.

Shepton knew that the second half was going to be a different ball game as Bridgwater would not take a loss and would be pushing to get back on track. Taylor, Durston, Izzy and Phillips made sure that the shepton defence stayed shored up and Cox confirmed her abilities by making a vital save just prior to the final whistle. Shepton gladly took the three points from this game moving two places up the league table. Phillips tyres player of the match Kerry Reynolds.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI  0 - 1 Bristol Uni

Shepton's second game back after the xmas break was against the young Bristol University side and on a waterbased astroturf which is not the norm for the local ladies.  Shepton started well passing the ball smoothly with several attacking chances.  Shepton came very close on numerous occassions with great linking play from Reynolds, Hunter, Brooker and Holland in midfield.  Shepton had a few shortcorner chances in the first half which were so close but not converted. Some great runs from Squire and Bolton saw Shepton hit the post making the uni defence work hard.  The uni girls didn't give up and with a defensive error from the Shepton Bristol saw their chance and converted to go into half time one goal up. Shepton had to keep the work rate up and great balls from Izzy put the uni girls on the back foot, Shepton were just so close but it wasn't happening. Shepton again had various short corners of which three were converted but disallowed due to height of strikes from Squire and Durston.  Shepton played well but unfortunately were not rewarded for their efforts and came away unworthy loosers.  Phillips tyres player of the match Steph Squire.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI  2 - 2 Nailsea

Shepton travelled through fog and rain to their first game on a new surface at Nailsea school. They had never played on this style of turf before and were apprehensive of the outcome.  The pitch played extremely slowly and was not to be taken for granted and the ball was apt to bounce more than on normal astroturfs.  Shepton were therefore surprised to take an early domination of this game with decisions not going Nailsea's way Shepton had more than a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet with Squire putting some super crosses into the circle but with surface and pace being an issue were not picked up.  Shepton had their fair share of defending with Izzy, Taylor, Hunter, Woodland and Phillips having to keep on thier toes.  Despite Shepton's apparent domination Nailsea were first to get the goals going and following a goalmouth scramble went into the lead but soon followed this up with another to take a two-nil lead into half time.  Shepton came out now playing uphill with a mountain to climb, they needed to work the Nailsea defence and pull out all the stops. Brooker, Trippick, Durston, Holland and Reynolds worked tirelessly working back and forth to keep Shepton in the game but ariel balls from Izzy soon started to frustrate and Shepton picked up a short corner. Squire did stop and strike and was rewarded with a goal.  From this Shepton knew that with time running out that they had to get an equaliser as a bare minimum and further work in the Nailsea circle found Izzy taking an impossible shot on this very strange surace to score and put Shepton level.  A very strange game but the adaption to the pitch was better than expected. Well done on this point ladies.  Phillips Tyres player of the match went to Reynolds who just did exceptional work in midfield.

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 0 - 5 Mendip Ladies

Shepton travelled to play top of the league Mendip with the certainty that this was going to be a really tough match and as the scoreline shows this was was an understatement. Shepton had Woodland in goal for only her second game but she showed great ability and determination ultimately coming out with the player of the match. She made many saves in the game. Shepton started the stronger team with shots on goal and gaining a number of short corners but couldn't convert. Great play in defence for Shepton from Chichocka, Phillips, Durston and Taylor took a lot of work to keep Shepton in the game but Mendip finally cracked the solid line and found the goal to start their tirade of scoring. The second goal came soon after making it 2-0 at half time. A positive team talk showed a determined Shepton starting the second half but their performance just couldn't break down the Mendip machine and more goals were forthcoming. Great determination from Hunter caused havoc in Mendip's defence but wasn't rewarded for her efforts. Shepton need to rise above this performance and take away the positives into next week's fixture against Nailsea. Phillips tyres player of the match - Holly Woodland

Shepton Mallet Ladies 1st XI 4 - 0 Weymouth

Shepton travelled to the seaside to play on-form Weymouth.  A very sandy pitch made the game very slow and sluggish and this could have been the basis for the play that was played.  Shepton had come to win following their victory last week pushing a little further up the league table if at all possible.  They pushed through the first half with solid play thoughout the team. With good possession Shepton finally broke the stalemate and got on the scoresheet with a goal from Squire.  Shepton kept up the pressure  with consistent play from Durston, Holland, Brooker, Reynolds and Cox who eventually found Hunter ready and waiting in the D  who battled hard to find the ever ready Squire and giving Squire the second goal of the match.  Shepton's 3rd goal came from player of the match Durston who skillfully took on the whole of Weymouth defence and hammered a goal of her own into the back of the net.  Shepton came out after the half time break knowing that they couldn't be complacent as Weymouth would be out to fight back. Within the first two minutes the link of Hunter to Squire found the Weymouth net for the fourth time giving Squire her hat trick and Shepton a nice cushion of four goals.  Shepton's defence of Taylor, Phillips, Woodland and Cichocka stayed solid keeping a clean sheet.  Shepton can take this win to next week to play top of the table Mendip. Phillips tyres player of the match - Stacey Durston
