SMHC On TV...... Shepton Mallet Hockey Club players will be featured in a new series scheduled for prime-time TV next month. They were chosen among thousands of hopefuls around the country to take part in the new show Ten Mile Menu, featuring celebrity chefs and top sports stars. Members of the Shepton Mallet Hockey Ladies team were chosen by Cactus TV to be the judges to sample the mouthwatering fare cooked up in the kitchens at Whitstone School by four very familiar faces. In the Blue Team were Olympic sprinter and Commonwealth champion Colin Jackson and Michelin star chef Jason Atherton. In the Green Team were England cricketer and TV personality Phil Tufnell, and Ready Steady Cook chef James Tanner. Their mission was to design and concoct a delicious three-course menu for a community group – but sourcing all the ingredients from food producers within 10 miles. Having thought up a menu, the two teams armed with their shopping lists sped off across the area to source their ingredients. Ports of call included James Chocolates at Evercreech, Avalon Vineyards, Sharpham Park, The Orchard Pig, Wootton Organics and Jon Thorners Farm Shop at Pylle. Back in the kitchens at Whitstone School, battle commenced as the teams cooked up their meals, to be sampled and judged by members of Shepton Ladies Hockey team. While the ladies tucked into the celebrities' culinary efforts and awarded marks the Shepton men's team were filmed playing hockey on the pitches at Shepton Leisure Centre. "It all went very smoothly – in fact it was one of the best sessions we have filmed so far," said the show's assistant producer Kirsty Dougall. Hockey club captain Tom Ward said they were thrilled to have been chosen for the series. He said: "After the girls had finished judging we all got to have a taste of what the teams cooked up – it was all delicious." The club is manning the bar at Shepton's Collett Day this Saturday. And Tom is getting all the photos blown up and put on display so the townsfolk can see what they got up to. He also got the four stars to sign a club shirt which will be on show and a bottle of champagne to auction off to raise money for the club. But just which team triumphed on its day in Shepton remains a closely guarded secret until the programme is aired next month. "We can't wait to see it," said Tom. |
